Most of the populous cities in Western Europe are centered around major rivers, or near the coast. A vast majority of the major rivers in Western Europe come from the Alps. The Alps were originally a barrier for the region, as they were hard to cross, leading to limited migration and trade. But over time, people began using mountain passes and tunnels to cross, creating a more diverse culture across Western Europe. Rivers were used for transport since the early days, and they helped trade and communication flourish across countries. But major rivers like the Rhine river have been largely impacted by pollution because of overuse. Overall, humans have adapted well to the different physical features around them, although current environmental issues may be hurting them.
